“Community service is important to the UCSD Greek community because it brings us all together to support a common cause. Philanthropy is one of the core values of every Greek chapter, so it’s something each one of us holds dear and regards highly. Once a quarter, it’s important for us to come together as a community for a Panhellenic and Inter-fraternity Council sponsored all-Greek fundraiser or service event to remind us of our values and build better sisterhood and brotherhood while contributing to a common good”
There is a huge emphasis on service here at UCSD, especially when it comes to each individual chapter. Every Panhellenic sorority has one or more charities they cater to throughout the year. As a result, there are multiple events every quarter held by each sorority that the Greek Community supports as a whole.
Below are the events planned by each chapter that are strictly philanthropic:
Alpha Chi Omega- Alpha Chi Factor
An annual talent show where chapters participate by showing off their individual talents. Alpha Chi Factor benefits Becky’s House, a local domestic violence shelter.
Alpha Omicron Pi- Alpha Games
An annual Jeopardy-style game show where chapters compete against each other by answering trivia questions. Alpha Games benefits The Arthritis Foundation.
Delta Delta Delta- Delta Idol
An annual singing competition between the Greek sororities and fraternities. Delta Idol benefits St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Kappa Alpha Theta- KAT at Bat
An annual America-themed baseball and softball competition between chapters. KAT at Bat benefits Voices for Children, which is the San Diego chapter of Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA.
Phi Sigma Rho- Phi Rho Your Boat
An annual boat-making competition and race where chapters engineer their own boats out of recycled materials and then take part in a boat racing competition. Phi Rho Your Boat benefits the American Cancer Society and Girl Scouts of USA.
Sigma Kappa- Sigma Kappa’s Best Dance Crew
An annual dance competition where sororities and fraternities create dance routines and compete against one another to be the best dance crew. Sigma Kappa’s Best Dance Crew benefits Inherit the Earth, Gerontology, Maine Sea Coast Mission, and Alzheimer’s Research.
Alpha Epsilon Phi- A Phine Affair
An annual dinner and auction event where chapters participate by auctioning off items like a beach house for the weekend or personal cooking classes and the like. A Phine Affair benefits Sharsheret & The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
Chi Omega- Chi Olympics
An annual athletic competition where chapters compete in a variety of games like tug-of-war or water balloon contests. Chi Olympics benefits the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
Delta Gamma- Anchorsplash
An annual synchronized swimming competition where chapters perform synchronized swimming routines. Anchorsplash benefits Service for Sight.
Kappa Kappa Gamma- Kappa Karnvial
An annual carnival where chapters have separate booths with different carnival activities like balloon animal making or face painting. Kappa Karnival benefits San Diego Youth Services.
Pi Beta Phi- Arrowspike
An annual beach day where chapters compete in Arrowspike, a volleyball competition, and enjoy a day at the beach. Arrowspike benefits Read, Lead, Achieve.
