Pi Beta Phi

Here at UCSD, our calendar is always packed with an array of activities from dominating the field in ISS Sports, to fun-themed exchanges and formals, and of course our annual philanthropy: Pi Beta Phi’s Surf Classic. But beyond that, Pi Phi allows all members the opportunity to cultivate sincere friendships and memories that will last a lifetime! Our chapter has a very diverse group of girls who are campus leaders, athletes, scholars, surfers, artists, future doctors and lawyers and so much more. Yet we are all united over a common love for our sorority and our sisterhood.

The California Kappa Chapter here at UC San Diego was founded in 1987. We are known for our strong sisterhood, fun formals and exchanges, and of course our annual Surf Classic, which raises money for our national philanthropy First Book. Our annual Surf Classic is unique to the California Kappa chapter and we receive recognition not only on the campus wide level, but as well as the Greater San Diego community and even from our Nationals! This year marks our 10th annual Surf Classic, and just like every year, our goal is to raise even more money than the last year and gain more publicity for our philanthropy First Book, which is an organization dedicated to fighting illiteracy. Last year, we were able to raise an astounding $20,000 and we hope this year to raise even more!

Pi Beta Phi was founded as I.C. Sorosis on April 28, 1867 and is considered the first national fraternity for women. With a clear commitment to service and a culture that develops the whole person, Pi Beta Phi Fraternity is a values-based organization in which individual development is a key component of the mission and vision of the organization. Pi Beta Phi attracts women who possess a desire to be a part of a dynamic organization that will promote growth in all areas of life. A dedication to core values is at the heart of the organization. Pi Beta Phi offers its members the opportunity to be part of an organization where members care for one another, shelter each other and share the bonds of sisterhood.

Pi Phi works to not only provide an enjoyable experience for its members, but also to foster their growth academically. One of our core values, personal growth, is there to ensure that our members not only make individual achievements, but are given the resources necessary to accomplish their academic endeavors. One valuable resource our chapter provides are designated Study Hours, in which we provide a private study space as well as tasty treats to encourage our members not only to maintain their personal academic success, but also to promote scholastic communication between members so may find study buddies or even a tutor for a difficult class. In addition to Study Hours, Pi Beta Phi has organized a “Master Class Schedule”, in which every member’s class schedule is combined in order to allow girls to see which classes they share with other Pi Phi’s. Not only is this another great way to meet study buddies and tutors, but it also allows girls to know that there’s a friendly face they can sit with during class as well as someone they can contact for notes in case they’re ill and can’t attend class that day. Because our chapter offers resources like these, Pi Beta Phi holds its members accountable academically. And to celebrate scholastic achievement, we hold an annual Scholarship Banquet where we recognize and celebrate with our members who have worked hard in their studies.
